Due to the 7km of golden sandy beaches under the warm, shallow waters of the Mar Menor, Los Alcazares has become one of the most popular beach resorts with families on the Costa Calida. It is just 6 km from San Javier Airport and its central location on the inland coast of the Mar Menor with easy access to the motorway system makes it perfect for exploring the whole of Murcia and beyond. With a carefully planned, low-rise development plan, Los Alcazares has grown significantly over the past 12 years but has managed to retain its small, traditional Spanish town charm. It has two separate areas that are often described as the "New Town" and the "Old Town". In fact, both offer a mix of old and new properties and seamlessly blend modern facilities with traditional charm. The original center of Los Alcazares or the "Old Town" has modern street shops, small specialty shops, traditional Spanish tapas restaurants and a beautiful quaint marina. The newly developed Los Narejos area or "New Town" was designed about 12 years ago to attract tourists and has since been further developed due to the growing popularity of the resort. Here you will find 525 square which is a 500 meter long pedestrian square that leads from the main road N332 at the top right down to the beach at the lower end. The square offers a great selection of family-friendly bars, elegant shops and modern international restaurants, all of which offer "al fresco" restaurants all year round. Its café bar, ice cream parlors, market stalls and street vendors offering handmade gifts, tattoos, braids and baby rides for rent also make it ideal for a family trip on a hot summer evening. The beach has a wide pedestrian street with street lighting that lies all seven km away from the marina in the old town, just south of the airport at the northern point. This makes it ideal for cycling, jogging or just an evening stroll. There are beautiful, traditional Spanish beachfront accommodation, sailing clubs, beach bars (Chiriguitos) and a unique children's playground scattered along its length. The special lack of loud music bars, sticky gift shops or "respectable, respectable" people means that this beautiful walking area by the sea has kept a relaxed family feeling which is the main attraction for many tourists in this area. Stay further away from town and you will find an area dedicated to late night music and a disco bar, a modern indoor shopping mall with a multi-screen cinema and an arcade. In addition, the town also hosts summer entertainment, a circus and an evening market in July and August. So while much lower key than some other Spanish resorts and still mostly for families, Los Alcazares still offers plenty to do for all ages.
