Anyone planning to buy a house in Spain will no doubt have heard of it; the NIE number. In this article we explain what it is, what you need it for and how to apply for it.
What is an NIE number
The NIE number stands for “Número de Identificación de Extranjero.” Literally translated, “foreigner identity number.” It is a tax identification number that allows a European citizen to identify himself in Spain.
It is best compared to the Dutch BSN number. Or the Belgian Rijksregisternummer only it is used much more often. If you want to stay longer than three months in Spain or make a transaction in Spain then you need one.

When do you need the NIE number?
As in the Netherlands and Belgium, you will need the NIE number at many times. For example: taking out subscriptions, identification in hospitals and clinics and of course you need it when buying your dream house in Spain.
It is actually impossible to make major purchases as a non-resident if you do not have a NIE number.
How do you apply for the NIE number?
You can apply for it in different ways. For example, at the Spanish embassy in the Netherlands or the local police station in Spain. Another option is to have the application arranged by the lawyer supporting you with the purchase of the property in Spain.
Do you choose to go to the police station? Then make sure you bring the following items:
- Two passport photos
- Passport or ID card
- Completed application forms
In addition to these three items, a healthy dose of patience is sometimes required. Therefore, the advice is to make an appointment at the relevant office. So you can also apply for the NIE number at the Spanish consulate in the Netherlands. You need to make an appointment for this and also bring the above documents with you.
By far the easiest way to get your NIE number is to give a power of attorney to the lawyer who guides you through the purchase. Everything will then be neatly arranged for you.
Difference between NIF and NIE number
The NIE number is often confused with the NIF number. The NIF number is the number you need when starting a business in Spain. The number is also the company’s VAT number.
