Villa in Kamara (Chania)

Kamara is a small village of stone lanes and olive groves at the foot of the Rodopos peninsula, 4.5 km inland from Kolymbari.

Rodopos Stone Villa sits within it: a stone property dating from around 1930, and fully restored in 2016.

The house offers 170 sqm of living space over three levels, on a 1,300 sqm plot. The ground floor includes the main living areas: a living room with a fireplace, a dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a double bedroom, and a shower room. On the first floor, a second double bedroom has its own bathroom with a walk-in shower and opens onto a veranda. This floor also has a small study. The third bedroom is set in the attic beneath the timber roof. A side semi-basement and a small storage room outside the kitchen add practical space.

The restoration kept the qualities that make a house of this age worth owning: stone walls, timber and traditional detailing throughout. The systems, however, are modern. Windows are double-glazed in aluminium frames, with shutters and insect screens, and the house has CCTV and an alarm system. Management companies in the area can handle bookings, changeovers, and maintenance for owners who are not on the island.

Kolymbari is the nearest town, a fishing harbour with waterfront tavernas, a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy and doctor. Just outside it stand Gonia Monastery and the Orthodox Academy of Crete. The Rodopos coast has quieter beaches such as Ravdoucha and Afrata, while the long sands of Falassarna and the Balos lagoon lie further west, beyond Kissamos. Chania, with its Venetian harbour, is reached along the national road, where safety upgrades between Chania and Kolymbari have recently been completed.
