Agios Nikolaos, known locally as Selinitsa, keeps a working harbour and a handful of waterfront tavernas, with the livelier resort village of Stoupa about 4 km north and the historic stone town of Kardamyli some 13 km beyond it. Behind the coast rise the Taygetos mountains, with gorges and old villages to walk to, while the deep Mani and Areopolis lie to the south. Kalamata, the nearest town, and Kalamata International Airport are both roughly an hour to an hour and a half away by road, so a car is part of life here.
